A Post Aussiecon Three "Space" Tour of Canberra Originally held Saturday 11 September 1999
For those wishing to visit Canberra, Australia's national capital, some Canberra fen have put together a day's tour of "space" related sites. The Canberra region has "an internationally unique set of astronomy and space related tourist venues". You would need to pay entry fees for some of the attractions, these have been included in the tour description below (AU dollars). Depart 0800 hours Tuggeranong Hyperdome
0830 hours Billy Tea and damper at Honeysuckle Creek , the ruins of the Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station. This Station received the first transmission from Neil Armstrong on the moon in 1969. The site is sign posted. (If the group is interested we can also see the ruins of Orroral Valley Tracking Station nearby).
1000 hours The Canberra Space Centre is the visitor information centre for the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex. The Centre houses displays, theatres and interactives. http://www.cdscc.nasa.gov/
1300 hours Lunch at the Red Belly Black Café at the Stromlo Exploratory, the Visitor's Centre for the Mount Stromlo Observatory. Check web site for admission costs. 1600 hours Look out from Telstra Tower. The tower rises 195 metres above the summit of Black Mountain, providing 360 degree views of Canberra and the countryside around it. Also includes a display on telecommunications in Australia. There is a small enrtry fee.
1730 hours Dinner at the Downer Club plus the Canberra Space Dome and Planetarium. The Canberra Planetarium & Observatory (http://www.ctuc.asn.au/planetarium/) is attached to the Downer Club (http://www.ctuc.asn.au/downer.htm) in Hawdon Place, Dickson. There is a cost for both observatory or planetarium sessions. There is a display area freely accessible.
The Downer International Buffet offers a smorgasbord of delicious "all-you-can-eat" dishes . Although the food may have an international flavour, the colonial courtyard atmosphere is very Australian. 2002 cost is $12.00 for Adults., reductions for seniors and children.
The Canberra Observatory features 4 research-grade telescopes under domes and is staffed by 9 astronomers. The observatory opens at 1930 hours and viewings are held every hour for 45 minutes duration.
The Canberra Planetarium offers a variety of exciting, entertaining and educational shows. There are two sessions 1900 hours and 2030 hours.
