Dear Friend,
The Friends of Pern is a Queensland based Fan Club*, coordinated by Southern Cross Weyrleader R'Yal, rider of Kath. In this club, members choose a Pernese "character" and the Club is divided into Holds and Weyrs. It has been some years since a Club Newsletter (Number 9 in 1990) was issued, so there are no club subscriptions or fees at the moment.
* For fans of the Dragon Rider and other Books by Anne McCaffrey.
Canberra Activities
At the moment in Canberra we have the Black Mountain Hold and Brindabella Weyr (Black Mountain is a central hill in Canberra City which provides a great look out, while the Brindabella Range is south in the Australian Capital Territory). If you'd like to join in with the local fun, you can create your own character (and Firelizard/s, rider beasts, dragons, whatever!) in our Hold or Weyr.
For example, some characters our members have created are Hold Lady Mertyl, Weyrlady Jaelara, Bronze Rider Tyana, a mysterious holdless woman named Dynami, Journeyman Healer Tia, Master Harper Nyssa, and a Hold Archivist!
In the past we have held Gathers (a lot of fun!) and regularly meet for an afternoon tea in Canberra, Australia.
This year's afternoon tea 'meetings' are on the last Saturday of July and November 2002 (2pm to 4pm). Email pernfriends@act-sf.8m.com for venue details.
The meetings are very informal. Usually we discuss everything and anything (including Anne McCaffrey or the Club). There is usually a door prize, plenty to eat, and non-alcoholic drinks. At the moment the age range is from 14 to 50.
